Dakar, Senegal - The Senegalese Lions have confirmed their grip on Group 6 in the 2010 joint qualification series leading to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and African Cup of Nations (CAN) after hitting Liberia 3-1 here Saturday.

Senegalese defender, Ibrahima Sonko, scored his first goal for the national squad, heading home in the eighth minute off a free kick by Elhadj Diouf. Diouf, former skipper of the Senegalese football team, took his turn in the tally, scoring Senegal's second goal in the 32nd minute.

In the second half, Skipper Tony Sylva's team-mates found it difficult to raise their game, especially as the Liberians became desperate and goal hungry. However, Henri Camara, who had just come in as a substitute for Issiar Dia, scored the third goal for Senegal, heading home a difficult ball after only 18 minutes into the second half.

The Liberian squad never gave up as Williams Dioh finally scored their consolation goal two minutes to the final whistle. The win by the Senegalese Lions comes on the heels of their 2-2 draw 15 June draw away to Liberia.

Consequently, with all teams having played four matches each, Senegal leads Group 6 with eight points, followed by Algeria (6 points), winner of the Friday encounter with Gambia (1-0).

The next round, to be played in September, will see Senegal travel to Algeria for a game expected to be decisive for the qualification, while Gambia and Liberia will lock horns in Banjul.
