Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o is bent on breaking the African Cup of Nations goal scoring record after equaling the 38-year-old mark on Saturday.
The former African Footballer of the Year scored in Cameroon’s 5-1 win over Zambia and equaled the 14-goal mark set by Laurent Pokou of the Ivory Coast in 1970.
Elated Eto’o said “I am really happy to have my name in the African football record books.”
“To tie the record of a legend like Pokou was such a special feeling for me.”
Eto’o, competing in his fifth Nations Cup started the tournament three behind Pokou’s record.
The Barcelona forward scored both goals in Cameroon’s 4-2 defeat by Egypt in their opening game on Tuesday and took his tally to three against Zambia on Saturday.
“Now my first objective is to keep scoring for my country and qualify for the next stage. But I also wish to beat the goal scoring record in my next match.”
Cameroon plays Sudan in their last Group C match in Tamale on Wednesday where a sound win would push them to six points and a likely spot in the last eight.
Egypt leads Group C with six points followed by Zambia and Cameroon on three. Sudan has lost both games.
