JOHN Obi Mikel scored one and set up another to avert riots in Nigeria as the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Benin to progress into the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Nigeria were also indebted to the Ivory Coast, who clinically dispatched Mali 3-0 in the other Group B encounter.
Mikel scored with a sharply-taken header then set up Yakubu Aiyegbeni with a brilliant clipped through ball to outlast the no less impressive Beninoise, who could have flung Nigeria out of the tournament but for some indecisive finishing.
The result will come as a huge relief for Nigeria and under-fire coach Berti Vogts.
Tournament hosts Ghana now await in the quarterfinal.
